New twist on restoring Antique's
Keep the Original Patina
Ok, so I've spent 9 years "restoring" a car to the original factory new presentation. Now I read in the NY Times that it's preferred one not "restore" but "preserve" your ride. Well if I didn't restore my 59 MGA... I might as well do my best impersonation of Fred Flinstone and push with my feet...."yabba...dabba...doooo!"
But this new "Preservation Class" makes sense. What's the value of a barn fresh antique vehicle vs. a restored vehicle of the same vintage? Quoting here:
“Cars can be restored over and over, but they’re original only once.”
I get it. Recently I visited a friends motorcycle restoration shop and drooled over an original untouched, non restored "authentic" Indian Chief. OMG! I've also been an eyewitness, barn probing with another restoration friend for private owners who wanted to sell their collection of antique vehicles. If these vehicles ran "as is" that would be cool. But typically they don't and need a ground-up restoration....or in some basket cases they should be ground up.
Hope you're enjoying the car shows and cruise nights...a BIG SHOW is coming up on October 20th...the Klingberg Family Car show in New Britain. More on that next time.
