Tis the Holiday Season
Where does the time go? One moment I'm raking leaves and the next I'm sweeping up needles that fell on the floor from the Christmas Tree.
In a matter of weeks I'll be yanking the lights off the tree anxious to get its dead carcass out the door. That's the same time of year when I have to consciously write the correct year on the checks.
I vividly remember my eighth grade teacher and principal at Assumption School in Ansonia, Sr. Ann Cornelius telling the class when she turned 45:
"As you get older, life goes by quicker and quicker, remember that."
I guess I did remember that, because now I fully understand what she meant. Our lives seem to have gotten so busy, filled with responsibilities, schedules, appointments, and agenda's, that life will pass us by if we don't hit the brakes and appreciate our families and co-workers.
Recently I covered two very important stories in New London. Live at 5 from Hempsted Street and another quick story on a completely different subject matter 20 minutes later, LIVE. It was crunch time. I just signed-off my LIVE at 5 story and spin around to begin to edit the next story with my photographer and I come face to face with a well dressed man who indicated he was homeless.
My first instinct was to gently excuse myself and ask the gentlemen to get back to me. But something inside me said whoah....stop. What are you doing? Get a reality check Kevin.
I talked to the man briefly. He wants to share his story of being homeless. I encouraged him to do that, so our viewers could have a better understanding of the blight of the homeless. Hopefully, we will connect.
Here's to putting the brakes now and then on our busy lives and reconnecting with people. Happy Holidays!
