I-95 Speed Cams

During her State of the State address, Governor M. Jodi Rell proposed funding a pilot program to install Speed Surveillance Cameras along I-95 to monitor and ticket speeders between Old Lyme and East Lyme. I say, why not! I live in the area and it might help slow-down the speeding 4 wheelers and truckers.
That's not the only stretch of roadway that could use some traffic enforcement cameras. You thought the "Connecticut Dragway" was dead?
How about i-91 Northbound between Middletown and Cromwell? Or the stretches along Route 8 ? Did we forget about i-395 Waterford? I- 84 Ashford?
When Channel 3 Eyewitness News promotes the fact that we are EVERYWHERE, we are EVERYWHERE and vary aware.
I welcome a pilot program. If modern technology can help our Connecticut State Police Troopers monitor the speeders then let it be, maybe lives could be saved.
What do you say?

I personally think they are a terrible idea!! Traffic cams hide behind the guise of "improving safety" "slowing speeding drivers" BS!! They are simply a way for the state to collect revenue without the overhead of a salaried officer, cruiser and potential lawsuits. When was the last time a camera filed for disability? or accused of excessive force? Win win for the state...
Cameras are useless if you do not know they are there. While travelling in France I noticed there are warning signs 500 meters before every camera. This gives you enough time to safely slow down and if you are not paying attention, and miss the warning sign, well, then there are consequences. But at least they give you a chance.
Does receiving a ticket in the mail give you the same 'heart in the mouth' feeling you get when you see that cruiser in the median or worse behind you with the lights on? Clearly, NO, and in my opinion makes them less effective. However, when the state begins to reap the benefits of this 'system' we will no doubt become like the UK, with a camera on every corner and eventually, sidewalk. They even have cameras with audio so they can yell at would be vandals etc... from the comfort of a monitoring center.
I'm really not a paranoid conspiracy junkie, but this is a really slippery slope, much like restoring old cars :-)

I agree with you 100%! In a time when the state is looking for extra cash...this would be perfect! No officer to pay and I would hope that we forgo the warning signs...don't you think that a speed limit sign that says 65 mph is enough??? I drive in this area and the minimum speed in the fast lane is 75!
I am definitely against the idea. I think that efforts should be made by on-duty officers to enforce truck safety instead because they are the cause of so many of our highway's accidents. Why are the weight stations usually closed? Who is checking their logs, weight, equipment etc??
Its a bad idea because it's about money not safety. The speeder going to the casino is not going to slow down when they get a ticket in the mail a week later. Not like the red and blue lights in the mirror. Please read some of the horror story on the Net. Who going ot pay you for the day of work you miss to explain that you were not the one driving the car. Remember innocent till proven guilty , not the other way around
