DC Orientation Week
CONGRESSIONAL ORIENTATION
What an experience Washington D.C. On Sunday, photographer Jeff Kolan and I flew down to begin a few days coverage of the orientation process for the Newly elected members of Congress, the 110th Congress.
Specifically, our assignment was to cover 2nd District Democrat Joe Courtney, who maintained a narrow lead over incumbant Republican Rob Simmons. The Secretary of the State's office ordered a recount. The process would take one week.
I haven't traveled to this beautiful city in a few years. It is awe inspiring! The buildings are huge, the new security measures installed since 911 are menacing. Blockade barriers are everywhere. The Capitol Police are armed and focused on every walking person and every moving vehicle approaching a key security checkpoint. Each building entry is manned with electronic portals. But there's also a reason for all of this security. It's for the security of our leaders and our nation's future.
I can't wait to return with my family next Spring and walk around at a more leisure pace, instead of the news coverage pace.
